Beginning in 2023, the NAME Foundation along with NAME and the American Academy of Forensic Sciences has contributed to the College of American Pathologists Foundation Forensic Pathology Advanced Training Grant program. Donations to this grant are dedicated to the memory of Beth Frost, DO, FCAP. The grant of up to $5,000 per resident pays for the travel expenses and housing of two pathology residents annually to rotate at an accredited Forensic Pathology Fellowship for four weeks. The grants are intended for those who do not have a FP fellowship affiliated with or near their residency. Two grants are awarded annually, with the potential of a third recipient if there are sufficient funds in the account.

“Due to a variety of training opportunities, I was able to visit other offices in the area for lecture, conferences, depositions, and crime scene investigations. This allowed me to work with a broad range of forensic pathologists at all different levels of training in the public and private sectors.” |

Omid Golestanian, MD West Virginia University PGY2, Pathology Resident Host Site: North Carolina Office of the Chief Medical Examiner (Raleigh, NC) |
“Throughout the rotation, I performed a diverse range of cases, including overdoses, suicide, gunshot wounds, and natural deaths, and observed different types of homicides. I performed autopsies independently, with the attendings available to answer my questions. Before starting an autopsy, we would have brief discussions about the differential diagnoses, possible causes of death, and the manner of death. By the end of the rotation, I was certain that I wanted to pursue a forensic pathology fellowship, and I am now preparing my application for the upcoming cycle.” |

Adrienne Workman, MD PGY-2, Pathology Resident Dartmouth Health Host Site: Office of Chief Medical Examiner of the City of New York (New York City, NY) |
“Every autopsy told a unique story, and I learned how to put together the narrative information, autopsy findings, and ancillary testing results to come to a conclusion about the cause and manner of death. At the end of the day, I had the opportunity to present each case that I was involved with to the senior staff. This allowed me to synthesize what I had learned throughout the day, receive feedback, and hear discussions about the challenging cases. It was incredible to see the network of forensic resources that the NYC OCME has available.” |
